What are the different levels of Service in Italy in a restaurant?

When I was in Italy, I recall that often there would be three levels of service in the same eating place. They would be in different rooms. Top tier would be Ristorante...and the bottom tier is Pizzaria..is the middle tier, which is kinda like a Bistro, Trattoria?

Well, actually, it depends on the place you are...in general, it is possible to distiguish more than 3 categories. Ristorante first, then Trattoria, more popular and with typical food, then Mensa, usually close to the work places and used by employers for lunch break (often is a self service), then Tavola Calda, with only counter service, then Pizzeria, serving pizza and little else, and finally Paninoteca, for sandwiches and fast food!
