Why do i have such an irregular sleep schedule?

I sleep between 3 and 12 hours in a day and i almost never go to sleep at the same time twice in a row, right now its 3 am and ive been awake for 28 hours, I have work at 8 am and i am contemplating not going to sleep, this is not to say im an insomniac, as some weeks i'll sleep an average of about 14 hours out of 24 total, only being awake for a few hours at a time

I'm a 19 year old male student with a low course load (typically only 1-3 classes a semester), I usually have close to a 3.8 GPA, we have required lab hours at my school and its more than enough time to get all my school work done and i retain information very well so i never really study for tests, and for midterms and stuff the inclass reviews are usually more than enough. I would consider myself of above average intelligence, ive never had an IQ test but ive been in "gifted" and AP classes most of my life

I have type two diabetes that i manage very well (recent A1C test of 6.5%) with just (1) 500mg pill of Metformin a day. I don't smoke or drink but i do smoke pot every once in a while (1-4 times a month), although i am addicted to diet soda (a soda addiction in general is what got me diabetes, but i switched to diet). Im a little overweight, at 6'4" and 270 lbs and 22% bodyfat, but by no means unhealthy

I have a part time job as a computer technician (>40 hrs a week) which nets me $1,300 a month and that more than covers all my financial needs (I am on a full scholarship and i receive a pretty sizable government financial aid) and this is has been part of the reason my sleeping pattern has grown more irregular, because I am basically on call to fix the computers at a small law firm and I also do personal jobs for the employees and their acquaintances and for the most part i make my own schedule

The biggest thing is that Im not depressed and that i live with next to no stress, and while i don't know if i'm qualified to make this assertion, I always have to disagree with people who tell me that i must be under stress or be depressed to have such a weird sleeping pattern

I basically spend all my time hanging out with my friends and playing video games, and ever since 5th or 6th grade I have had a very irregular sleep schedule

The problem is that i have a weird phobia of doctors which goes double for psychiatrists therapists and psychologists or anyone who is basically a head doctor (which is weird since i've never really been to one) so going to see someone about this is all but out of the question, i have to have two people with me when i go for checkups about my diabetes and even then its really hard for me to be there

anyways, if anyone has an kind of advice or answers or suggestions they are welcome, im just a little worried because ive been reading alot about sleep in general and my irregularity seems to be more than just that, it seems to be a real health problem

Answer on Why do i have such an irregular sleep schedule?

Sleeping schedules can be very different for different people. I too am a college student and i did a final project on sleep and sleep studies.

Most people have a natural circadian rhythm. Others, (myself included) have become victims of society.

Sleep patterns are regulated by the earth. When it's daytime, we're awake. When it's night time we're asleep. But due to modern society much of this has been twisted.

Now we have artificial light that can serve as a "sun" in our own room. We are usually inside with a steady steam of artificial light. Not outside where the light changes as time passes. This can severely affect the body's clock.

Also, youth is a factor. Most young people today (under 25) suffer from the same problems.

If you're looking to try and fix it, i would recommend exercise and a sleep schedule. It's difficult to do but possible if you're willing to discipline yourself.
