Britain had a very strong navy and had a huge empire with colonies around the world. But obviously Britain is an island and therefore cut off from Europe and possible allies...This could be a weakness.



France also had a very strong empire and armed forces. It was fighting Germany for land in Africa and the fact that Germany (a possible enemy) was right next door to it was a disadvantage.



Russia was very poor and could not fund a large army but had plenty of men so strength in numbers.



Germany was struggling to gain an empire like France and Britain and was making an enemy of France in Africa and was in the unfortunate position of being surrounded by Russia and France, two potential enemies.



Austria-Hungary was a big empire in itself and had a natural ally with Germany as they spoke the same language.



Italy failed to gain any kind of an empire and was not a strong military force.
