On September 3, 1943 the armies of Britain and Canada invaded southern Italy at Calabria, the code word for this operation was "Baytown", there was also an airborne attack on Taranto called operation "Slapstick". This invasion was followed by an invasion of United States troops at Salerno in operation "Avalanche" which was on September 9, 1943.

Resistance to these attacks was relatively light since Italy capitulated and asked the allied for an armistice on September 3, the Italian armies put up no resistance to the invasion and were either disarmed by the former German allies, or surrendered to the Allies without fighting. There were few German troops in the area able to resist the invasions, so the attacks succeeded with light casualties..
