After WWI and then the Great Depression Italy attempted to have a monarchist parliamentary government, but this didn't work. There was a lot of corruption and little action. This caused contention amongst the people. This inspired the rise of the Fascists, Mussolini's party. These are basically really intense nationalists. Mussolini became prime minister and eventually came to rule Italy. He was the one who helped Italy "rise", eventually with the aid of Hitler, though Italy never reached the immense power of Germany in WWII
