Is there any way I can search for 1680's birth certificate from Genoa Italy?

I just found information about my 7th great grandfather and he was born in Genoa Italy, if I go to Genoa would i be able to find information about him? It doesn't necessarily have to be a birth certificate but at least something that could give me another lead. Since when did they started recording baptisms?

Churches often keep records of marriages, baptisms, etc, of parishioners, and old churches' records may go back a long time. However, congregations may form and dissolve, old records are subject to decay despite careful keeping, and fires have always been a hazard to old records. You would need to check with Genoa authorities to see what records they have kept and how far back. And if you had some idea of the person's religion and parish, you might gain permission to see their old records. Going that far back is going to be very difficult, as I'm sure you understand.
