Help with picking a travel destination?

Me and my boyfriend (22yrs & 26yrs) are looking to start doing some traveling. Since we live in Italy, but have pretty much seen it all already, we wanted to expand to the other parts of Europe. We can easily do long weekend trips. We just aren't sure where to start. I'm torn between Madrid or Barcelona, my boyfriend is leaning more towards Amsterdam. I know there are a lot of great places to see, but it's just so hard to pick. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...from personal experiences to best places to see. Thank you!

Amsterdam would be a great place to start off,I have been a few times and always manage to find something new.Best of luck
